The 17th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas  (the day for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs))  is celebrated annually on January 9, this time event organised in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

  • Government of India (GoI) released a commemorative postal stamp ‘Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen’.
  • It was the first-ever digital PBD Exhibition, on theme of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav - Contribution of Diaspora in Indian Freedom Struggle’.

Theme: ‘Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal’.

 

Key Points:

  • Over 3,500 diaspora members from nearly 70 different countries have registered for the PBD Convention.
  • Indore is a city as well as a phase. It is a phase that walks ahead of time while preserving its heritage.
  • Global vision: the global order will be strengthened by Pravasi Bharatiyas during the Amrit Kaal.
  • “Pravasi Bharatiyas are the Rashtradoots (national ambassadors) of India’s heritage, of Make in India, of Yoga and Ayurveda, of India’s cottage industries and handicrafts”.
  • The brand ambassadors of India’s millets (International Year of Millets 2023).
  • The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is given during the event.
  • It is the highest honour conferred on a Non-Resident Indian, Person of Indian Origin.
  • Government also highlighted; G-20 is not just a diplomatic event but it should be turned into a historic event of public participation where one can witness the sentiment of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’.

The PBD Convention will have five thematic Plenary sessions-

  1. First Plenary on ‘Role of Diaspora Youth in Innovations and new Technologies’.
  2. Second Plenary on ‘Role of Indian Diaspora in promoting Indian Healthcare Eco-system in Amrit Kaal: Vision @2047’.
  3. Third Plenary on ‘Leveraging the soft power of India - Goodwill through craft, cuisine & creativity’.
  4. Fourth Plenary on ‘Enabling global mobility of Indian workforce – Role of Indian Diaspora’.
  5. Fifth Plenary on ‘Harnessing the potential of diaspora entrepreneurs towards an inclusive approach to nation building’.

 

Background of Pravasi Bharti Divas (PBD):

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on January 9 every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India.
  • January 9 was chosen because on this day in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa.
  • Shri A.B. Vajpayee started the PBD convention in 2003 and since then it was held every year till 2015. Now PBD celebrated biannually.
